Alexis Sanchez signs for Barça

Alexis Alejandro Sánchez Sánchez has become Barça’s first signing of the summer. A fee of €26 million + €11.5 million in variables has been agreed with Udinense and the Chilean forward will join us for five years. As I have said previously I don’t know a lot about Alexis but he seems quite similar in style to Pedro. He seems the type of forward who will fit in well as he is very good at taking on defenders. He turned down a possible move to Manchester City where he would have earned more money for the chance to join us which shows he is more interested in winning trophies than making money which is a positive sign. His national team manager Marcelo Bielsa said of him recently, “Alexis is in an important moment in his development as a player. He is currently one of the best ten players in the world…I would like to see him in a team like Barcelona that play to attack, that’s not to say that his team (Udinense) don’t attack but the style of play is very different.”

I have to say I think this is a very good signing which will add to competition for the forward positions and provide an excellent alternative to Pedro and Villa. It is going to be a very long season with six trophies to be fought for so we some more quality is very important for us, though to be honest I couldn’t care less about Fabregas now. Send in your comments on whether or not you think Alexis is a good signing.

I’m really happy to see this signing went through. I’m happy to see we didn’t throw out an astronomical amount of money, either. Some of the figures being tossed about the periodicals before had me a bit worried.

I’m especially happy that Alexis seems well able to take defenders on 1 on 1. I think in certain games when Messi is being heavily man marked and double, triple, even quadruple teamed having another player that can really take advantage of this space and go for some slaloming runs could be just the ticket.

Let’s hope he can adjust quickly.

Very pleased with this signing – my knowledge of Alexis is based primarily on youtube videos however I was impressed by his workrate and willingness to track back and win balls. Whilst I don’t think we need competition between the front three of MVP, I do think that being able to cycle through them without a drop off in quality will give us so much flexibility, aside from the need for cover. Early Doors on Yahoo has a reasonably nice piece on him:

Definitely agree with you (and I think Pep) Nic, that he was the priority over Cesc.

I don’t know too much about Alexis aside from youtube videos and the media frenzy surrounding him over the past few months. I do think the fact that he’s young, seems to be free of any attitude problems and now with Pep’s guidance he will prove to be a very good signing and add further quality to an excellent forward line.
