Stat of the Day – A Corner?!?!!

This was the first successful Barcelona direct corner kick in 196 attempts.

And bonus stat:  Puyol has scored more in the Bernabeu than Cristiano Ronaldo has at the Camp Nou (2 versus 1)

196 attempts… Must be the poorest stat on corners all across Europe…

I already asked this but seriously, does any of you remember of a goal scored on a corner in a meaningful game recently? Recently like, in the last ten years, I mean?

I know we scored a few at the start of the season, but I’m thinking a clasico or a Champions League tie or something? I’ve always been frustrated with this. And the worst: due to bad timing, I missed the first five minutes of the second half yesterday…

The most recent one I can think of was Piqué’s at Villarreal last April. Busquets flicked the ball on and Piqué controlled on his chest before hooking in. We won the game 0-1 and the three points were vitally important at the time.

that stat is interesting and fun but totally irrelevant. since my first ever recollection of barca, we have never really valued corners nor direct freekicks anywhere out of shooting range and ive always been quite proud of that. its not not our style to hoove it in and hope someone scores. we’d rather get the ball down on the floor, find a different avenue and continue to tire the team. in any case, corners are a very small % of goals scored, even for a team like stoke, so we don’t lose a hell of a lot. its not not in the ehtos of barca to whack corners in and i have zero problem with it.

however, i remember in peps frist year we actually did quite well with them. there was some stat that he increased corner efficiency by 300% of something. and we’ve actually been unlucky with corners, i remember a few smart attempts when we they drill it in low for someone to come on and hammer it in. a lot of those have barely just missed or the player misses the shot.

Well, I’m not sure about it, but I think the best teams score every 30-something corners, so that’s a pretty big difference. Personnally I’ve always been frustrated by this situation, cos’ even if we often “get the ball down on the floor”, we still send a lot of them into the box with absolutely no result. That’s a lot of amo lost, and also a danger of course cos’ we are always susceptible to counter attacks. I certainly noticed that we’ve been a notch better under Pep, but still far from efficient. The good point is that apart from a bad spell at the start of the season, we’ve historically been pretty good at defending corners, sometimes really surprisingly considering we’ve sometimes such a small team playing against some giants…

Haha, Puyol vs CR. Here’s hoping that CR doesn’t get to score anytime soon.
I like to see more direct corner kicks in the future. The short corners end up with nothing as what the stat says.

I think we should all remember the part Pepe played (or rather didn’t play) in the goal. As he stood daydreaming about which part of Leo Messi’s anatomy he might next inflict injury to, Captain Puyol nipped in front of him to head gloriously pasy Casillas.
