All the Spanish press are today talking about the possibility that Barça could make a move for the Argentinian defender Santiago Vergini. Tata Martino coached Vergini for two successful years at Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina and therefore knows the player well. With many complications to find a suitable player for the position Vergini would be a cheaper option than most of the other overpriced candidates.
The 24-year-old Vergini was born 60 km from Martino and Leo Messi’s hometown of Rosario. He seems to have been a late developer; after unimpressive spells at Paraguay’s Club Olimpia and the Italian club Verona he returned to Argentina to join Newell’s in 2011, and it was only after Martino arrived as coach that Vergini became a vital part of the defence. He has only one international appearance to his name from the 2-1 defeat to Brazil in September 2012 when he came on as substitute for the final 17 minutes.
For a better idea of Vergini’s qualities here’s a video compilation.
