Martino wants Newell’s central defender Santiago Vergini

vergini newell'sAll the Spanish press are today talking about the possibility that Barça could make a move for the Argentinian defender Santiago Vergini. Tata Martino coached Vergini for two successful years at Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina and therefore knows the player well. With many complications to find a suitable player for the position Vergini would be a cheaper option than most of the other overpriced candidates.

The 24-year-old Vergini was born 60 km from Martino and Leo Messi’s hometown of Rosario. He seems to have been a late developer; after unimpressive spells at Paraguay’s Club Olimpia and the Italian club Verona he returned to Argentina to join Newell’s in 2011, and it was only after Martino arrived as coach that Vergini became a vital part of the defence. He has only one international appearance to his name from the 2-1 defeat to Brazil in September 2012 when he came on as substitute for the final 17 minutes.

For a better idea of Vergini’s qualities here’s a video compilation.

    Sign him!

  2. ken says:

He has a very good hight and very quick in response, will most likely present the required competition in that position.

  3. Nuli says:

Martino we hope u wll be like pep G. fans are hpy 4 dy vergini 2 barca

  4. barcacentralomer says:

Lets go get him. After all his contract has expired so we should get him for free. Moreover, we can use the savings to go after another top CB or at least a promising youngster because the current CB pair even when Pique is around looks shaky at best and chaotic at worst.

  5. JW says:

To put it simply the guy is 24 has 1 cap for Argentina, and failed to make it in Italy with Verona. He’s not the answer for Barca plain and simple, what Barca are shopping for is someone to replace Puyol, a true defensive leader is what is needed Santiago Vergini is not the guy.

Barca’s rivals are strengthening with estabilished names and talent, signing a guy who would not have even registered on Pep or Titos radar is a step backwards.

  6. Hovik says:

he is great, he reads the game well but he is not a leader, no one can replace Puyol… His blood is red and blue, he plays with heart and he is the heart of the team… I think his presence on the field even makes the team play better
Thiago Silva is a great player, experienced but he is not gonna be able to replace Puyol either.. we need someone from Catalan someone who would give his 100% for the team and leads the team… plus Brazilian players are great but very few have discipline dont wanna have more than a few on the field at the same time .. Pep’s had some problems with D.Alvez for his lack of discipline …Neymar is fine, he is young and he will learn all that in FCB… players like Franco Baresi, Carlos Puyol, Maldini, and such … are almost irreplaceable it takes some time maybe a few years for someone to step in…
