Leo Messi today received the 2012/13 Golden Boot award as top goal scorer in European leagues last season. The ceremony took place at the Antigua Fábrica de Estrella Damm in Barcelona with Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué, Cesc Fabregas, Xavi Hernández, Jordi Alba, José Manuel Pinto and Adriano Correia among the audience. Messi received the award from Barça legend Hristo Stoichkov who won the award himself as a CSKA Sofia player in 1989/90 when he tied with Hugo Sanchez on 38 goals. Stoichkov told Messi “You’ll recover soon and the next Golden Boot you win will be that of the World Cup. You deserve it.” Nine other players, including Gerd Muller, Eusebio, Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo, have won the award twice, but Messi is the first player to win the award three times, having already won it in 2009/10 and 2011/12.
Messi scored 46 goals in the 2012/13 Liga though the fact that Marca form part of the Golden Ball jury means that he is only credited with 45 as Marca gave his goal against Athletic Club as an own goal by Fernando Amorebieta. Even so, with each goal in La Liga counting as two points, Messi was the clear winner with 90 points, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo with 68 points and Edinson Cavani with 58.
Enjoy Messi’s 46 goals again.
