Luis Suarez has been confirmed today as Barça’s latest signing. The fee has not been disclosed but according to El Mundo Deportivo Barça will pay Liverpool €81 million for the player. The 27-year-old will sign a five-year contract and he will be presented next week but due to his four-month ban he will not be able to make his blaugrana debut until the end of October.
I have already expressed my doubts about this deal in the last two posts and I find it difficult to see how Suarez is worth twice our valuation of Alexis. However, there are few players on the world scene who excite me as much as Suarez and, despite our poor financial dealings, if the Uruguayan finds his form at Camp Nou he could offer better returns than the Chilean. You can imagine how tempting it is for me to say he will add bite to our attack, but perhaps it might be better now to praise his indomitable never-say-die spirit. I compared him previously to Hristo Stoichkov and I’m hoping he can excite Camp Nou in the same way the Bulgarian did back in the 1990s.
